WalkSafe happens here.
As a non-profit 501(c)3 program, WalkSafe operates on grants from local, state, and federal organizations along with the generosity of donations made directly to the KiDZ Neuroscience Center - our center for youth injury prevention that is the home of both WalkSafe and BikeSafe at the University of Miami's Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.
This funding has made our projects possible ever since our founding in 2001, allowing WalkSafe to perform youth pedestrian safety research while simultaneously reaching Miami with our educational curriculum and informational content.
Where it all began
WalkSafe - and later, BikeSafe - came to life with our community partners as part of our very first Task Force meeting in 2003.
Task Force brought community members from Miami-Dade County, local municipalities, Ryder Trauma Center (Jackson Health System), Miami (Nicklaus) Children's Hospital, and the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization (now Transportation Planning Organization) together, with the collective goal of reducing youth-related traffic injuries in the region.

This two-year partnership with Miami-Dade’s Vision Zero team will geolocate trauma data for pedestrian and bicycle crashes and will examine innovative manners of collecting undocumented crash and near-miss data.

This two-year partnership with the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians will gather community input and form an action plan towards walkability and mobility improvements within the reservation.

This Transportation Alternatives grant will support the creation of WalkSafe and BikeSafe’s all-new online education portal with virtual curricula, learning materials, and new resources; created especially with safe streets and protected bike lanes in mind.

This project, in partnership with the City of Miami’s Parks and Recreation Department, will create five interactive “Safety Trails” for families to explore throughout the city, plus additional outreach and community events.

This project will continue implementation of WalkSafe and BikeSafe in Florida’s Monroe, Broward, Palm Beach, Osceola, and Orange counties.

This project will sustain and expand WalkSafe educational activities in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

This project will allow WalkSafe educational activities to expand statewide to Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa counties, and continue in Duval, Orange, Palm Beach, and Broward.

This Safe Routes to School initiative will extend WalkSafe and BikeSafe’s existing multimedia grant for an additional year and help initiate the creation of BikeSafe’s Community Conversation interview series.

This Safe Routes to School initiative, through Florida’s UF SRTS program, will support further WalkSafe and BikeSafe multimedia efforts towards traffic safety, including videos, flyers, posters, and other media content for bicycle riders and pedestrians.

This project will sustain WalkSafe educational activities in high risk Florida counties, including Duval, Orange, Palm Beach and Broward, in addition to continuation in Sarasota.

This project will continue educational WalkSafe activities in the following Florida counties: Bay, Leon, Alachua, Duval, Orange, Sarasota, Palm Beach, and Broward.

The 2014-2015 UF / FDOT / Florida Safe Routes to School grant will support a multimedia safety campaign including billboards, cinema advertisements, and transit advertisements.
