Your neighborhood is a library of street design history. No matter how ordinary, every street, intersection corner, and crosswalk in your neighborhood was engineered based on various standards used by your state’s department of transportation and your local public works department.
Those standards have changed over time, with the latest advances focusing on pedestrian safety as a first priority, instead of automobile speed.
In this activity guide, you can document the different types of pedestrian-first street designs in your neighborhood, in addition to design hazards that may still exist. Remember: Please walk with an adult if you are under 10 years of age.
